Constitucion railway station in Buenos Aires during massive energy blackout in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay on June 16, 2019 phone Getty Buenos Aires, Argentina — As lights turned back on across Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay after a massive blackout that hit tens of millions of people, authorities were still largely in the dark about what caused the collapse of the interconnected grid and were tallying the damage from the unforeseen disaster. Argentine President Mauricio Macri promised a thorough investigation into what he called an "unprecedented" outage, one that raised questions about flaws in South America's grid, which connects many of the region's largest countries. Energy officials said the results of the investigation would be available in 10 to 15 days, and they could not immediately provide details on the economic impact of the outage, which came on a Sun...

reality check: what does, and doesn’t, protect your ...

Once you get a smartphone, what's the first thing you might want to go along with the device? For many people, it's probably a case. That's because carrying a smartphone without a case is like driving a car without bumpers — and no one wants a new gadget to shatter, crack or get dented. Spending on mobile phone accessories is expected to reach $107. 3 billion by 2022, according to Allied Market Research, up from about $61 billion in 2014. Protective cases are the hottest sellers wire in the category.Yet here's the truth about those accessories: Some products that purport to protect your smartphones are useless. It's unclear, for one, whether a screen protector — a thin plastic or glass film for your phone display — actually prevents glass from shattering upon impact. Sales clerks at cellphone stores also often pressure people into purchasing expensive extended warranty plans for their devices, many of which can be skipped. So here's a reality check on what does ...

The best frying pans you can buy, from cast iron to non-stick and stainless steel

Image
T o find the best frying pans on the market, weasked chefs, food writers, and cookware professionals for their thoughts, and then put the standout itemsto the test in The Telegraph kitchen. After consulting with the experts, we decided that the pan we're looking for is versatile – it can cook different types of food to black good effect – durable – it won't end up in the bin after three months – and good value for money – meaning it's either pleasingly affordable or so long-lasting that you won't ever have to buy the item again. There are a lot of different types of frying pan out there, so we narrowed our search to three main fields: iron pans (highly durable but harder to maintain), non-stick pans (easy to maintain but less durable) and stainless steel (highly spoken of by the pros but tricky to use). Each frying pan was tested for a variety of regular functions: frying or scrambling eggs, searing steaks, sautĂ©ing vegetables. We also considered: weight, ease of use,a...

How firm should your mattress be?How firm should your mattress be?How firm should your mattress be?

Image
When it comes to finding a mattress that feels just right, there's a lot to consider. Are you large or small? Do you always sleep on your back or do you switch from your tummy to your side? Do you usually sleep alone or with a partner? It's important to think about your answers and then visit a mattress showroom like the CJ Mulholland Mattress Factory in Hamilton where you can try out a wide range of mattresses before you buy. Experts agree you should always lie on a mattress for at least 15 minutes before deciding whether it's comfortable or not because some mattresses take that long to conform and adjust to the shape and warmth of your body. It's also a good idea to bring along the pillow honeycomb you sleep with to make sure you'll still find it comfortable once it's in your home. Firm or extra firm mattresses are good for back sleepers or tummy sleepers because they provide the best support for the spine. Sleeping on a softer mattress can cause the spi...

upcycled plastic weave - bathroom storage & litter box

Image
This bathroom storage hamper and litter box is made almost entirely from reclaimed materials. The main frame is made from salvaged pine which used to live as wall paneling in a church on Cape Cod. The weaved panels are created from PVC sheet packing material that was pulled from the trash at a lumber yard and is formed to the weaved pattern. Legs are from mahogany deck balusters that were salved from the trash. The side sections surface are for storage (cat litter, laundry detergent) and the center is a litter box. All compartments are accessible both through the top and through the front. I start by cutting the pine paneling down to length for all of the pieces of the face frames and the doors. These piece are then all cut down to the final width - all of the pieces are 2" wide except for the top and bottom of the cabinet panels are 3" wide. For the front face frame, I use pocket holes to fasten it together. I drill them out using a pocket hole jig.The stiles and rails for t...

From Marie ClaireIn June 2017, sisters Ashley and Kimberly Heavy Runner Loring were full of plans. Ashley hoped to leave her home on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, east of Glacier National Park in Montana, later that summer for Missoula, where she would live with Kimberly while studying environmental science at the University of Montana. But while Kimberly was away for a few months getting to know her fiancé's family in Morocco, Ashley grew despondent. The then-20-year-old was devastated following a breakup and often texted her sister for advice. "It was like her world was ending," says Kimberly, now 25. Ashley cried more often and kept to herself. She stopped attending her classes at Blackfeet Community College and befriended a decades-older crowd, which included some who were rumored to sell and use drugs like meth. In early June, she called Kimberly, saying she needed metal money. Kimberly couldn't send it from Morocco but promised she would be home in just a...
