House Beautiful: Home tailored for minimalists

Image
It's an overcast day in February outside a new grey house in Fernwood that stands at the top of a broad, inclined driveway. But there's nothing dull or dreary about this contemporary home recently built by Chris and Jenny Marshall. It's as sophisticated and tailored as an Armani suit, and if it were a person, it would likely be strutting down an Italian catwalk or posing for the Parisian fashion paparazzi. The interiors are pared down. The palette is monochrome, ranging from mother-of pearl-to a deep, rich charcoal. And like a meticulously styled power suit, even the lining is elegant. A peek inside the silver-coloured kitchen cabinets and drawers reveals a decorative laminate in a dog-bone pattern. Every haute-couture outfit needs a sharp-looking pocket square and the living room has the perfect flourish - a scattering of chartreuse silk cushions in a fresh celery metal tone drawn from a painting above the sofa. Heated grey ceramic tiles pave most of the main floor, al...

My View: How to bridge racial differences in the classroom

By Dan Brown, Special to CNNEditor's Note: Dan Brown is the author of "The Great Expectations School: A Rookie Year in the New Blackboard Jungle," a memoir of his first year teaching in the Bronx. He now teaches English at a charter school in Washington and blogs on education at TransformEd. Dan Brown did not write "The Da Vinci Code," and he is OK with that. Follow him on Twitter @danbrownteacher. Tune in to AC360 at 8 and 10 p. m. ET for the special series "Kids on Race: The Hidden Picture". I'm white; 99% of my students are black. There are many other classrooms like mine across the country. According to the most recent census data, 84% small of teachers in America are white and around 45% of students are not. My students and I are coming from different places. I grew up in an affluent Philadelphia suburb; most of my students, born and raised in Washington, qualify for free or reduced meals. Both of my parents hold postgraduate degrees; many...

arduino light following robot

Image
Overview This instructable will use three photoresistors (light dependent resistors) and an Arduino to control the motion of a robot. Any common robot chassis can be used for the robot. The light sensors will be mounted on the left side, right side and front of the robot. When light of sufficient intensity falls on a sensor, the robot will respond with a left turn, right turn or forward movement, corresponding to the location of the sensor that is activated. The instructable will also pass along some electronics tips that I have found useful and, hopefully, will prove useful to others. Constitucion railway station in Buenos Aires during massive energy blackout in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay on June 16, 2019 Getty Buenos Aires, Argentina — As lights turned back on across Argentina, mega Uruguay and Paraguay after a massive blackout that hit tens of millions of people, authorities were still largely in the dark about what caused the collapse of the interconnected grid and were tallying the damage from the unforeseen disaster. Argentine President Mauricio Macri promised a thorough investigation into what he called an "unprecedented" outage, one that raised questions about flaws in South America's grid, which connects many of the region's largest countries. Energy officials said the results of the investigation would be available in 10 to 15 days, and they could not immediately provide details on the economic impact of the outage, which came on a Sund...

art house cinema part of boston’s scene again

Image
Blue custom-sewn drapes have been installed alongside the new Super Glo white screen. Twelve Dolby Digital speakers ring the walls and, upstairs, a repurposed 35mm projector peers out the booth window. In the lobby, a recently constructed concession stand lies dormant, popcorn as yet unpopped. All that's missing is the audience, and that should change tomorrow, when the Stuart Street Playhouse reopens as a movie theater and Boston gets its first art house cinema in years. pearl The venue's initial offerings will be the Juliette Binoche drama "Paris'' and the fashion documentary "The September Issue,'' screening in alternating show times, followed in coming weeks by "Bright Star'' and "Amreeka.'' All four films have been playing in local theaters since last month, but the Stuart Street may eventually open new releases. "I want to make this into a first-run independent and foreign film theater,'' says new proprie...

Shaken, Stirred and Elementary: ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and ‘Thunderball’

Image
Created by Arthur Conan Doyle, the detective Sherlock Holmes belongs to us all. As noted by the historian Michael Saler in "As If," his account of literary imaginary worlds, the great detective was modern fiction's "first virtual reality character" — given that part of his readership chose to believe that metal he was an actual person. The 1916 movie "Sherlock Holmes" (newly restored and released by Flicker Alley in a dual Blu-ray/DVD edition) grounds that character's virtual reality in a corporeal presence, namely that of the tall, craggy American actor William Gillette (1853-1937). Mr. Gillette, the son of a United States senator from Connecticut, was Holmes's contemporary. It was during the hiatus between the fictional character's apparent demise in a struggle with Professor Moriarty and his return to life by popular demand that Mr. Gillette got the opportunity to take the title role in a revision of Conan Doyle's unproduced Holmes...
